Esther the duck

Esther

Esther is a beautiful Silver Appleyard duck, who is extremely sweet. She was rescued in January of 2020 on the same day as Rudy the pig (they were in the same area), and we are so happy she will be able to live out the rest of her natural life here at the sanctuary! Esther lived in a backyard with her sister, and one day, a stray dog was able to enter the yard and killed Esther’s sister in front…

Rudy

Rudy was found by a worker at a hog farm while cleaning the nursery. All of the other piglets had been moved to a finisher barn three days prior, so Rudy had been left all alone with no care, food, or water for three days. He had been tossed on a pile of dead piglets who had perished during the farrowing process. He was surrounded by his dead siblings, body parts, and half-eaten piglets when he was discovered. Matilda

This gorgeous girl escaped a local processing shop by finding a hole in the fence and running for her life! Someone would have picked her out at the meat shop and she would have been slaughtered right there on the spot. She was found by a pair of compassionate women, and brought to us in good health other than a chipped beak. She’s a beautiful, intelligent, and friendly little girl, and now she has a forever home here at the…

Lily is a Pekin duck and Olive is a Rouen duck. Pekin ducks are generally used for meat and eggs as well as the…

Jack Benny

Jack Benny was found running through a bean field in Story City Iowa. A concerned area resident was able to coax him into a kennel and took him to a local animal shelter. The man also called Iowa Farm Sanctuary who worked with the agency to contact us and make arrangements for us to pick him up. Jack had either escaped from a truck off I-35 or from a local farm confinement in the area. Unlike Marge, Jack got away…

Marge

Iowa Farm Sanctuary reached out to us about a four week old piglet who fell from a transport truck and broke her jaw. They had this piglet in their care and were getting her the medical care she needed at Iowa State University. Having many animals themselves, they thought this little piglet would be a good fit at Spring Farm Sanctuary, and boy were they right. We drove down to Iowa to pick up Margie. We are so thankful to…

cow grazing scruffy spring farm animal sanctuary

Scruffy (In Memoriam)

Scruffy was a Hereford beef steer. He was abandoned by his mother at birth and had an injury on his leg that gave him a 50/50 chance of ending up lame. Because in the farming industry slaughter is opted for over veterinary care, Scruffy was headed for slaughter when a very kind couple, Bob and Vicki, offered to buy him. They bottle fed and cared for him and he blossomed. Three months later, Bob and Vicki got a call from…
